Overview

Mentors inspire, encourage, and support you, and contribute to your professional and personal development. You can expect to strengthen and build your network, and gain the skills and confidence necessary to move forward.

All currently enrolled Harvard College undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Mentees may be beginning their STEM journey as a first-year student, establishing themselves as sophomores or juniors, or looking forward to post-graduate life as seniors. Undergraduate mentees will have the opportunity to self-match with graduate students, postdocs and professional mentors.

Participant reflections

Feedback collected from undergraduate participants emphasizes just how impactful this program is, with 83% of participants indicating that participating in the WiSTEM Mentorship Program makes them feel more included in the women in STEM community at Harvard. One student remarked,

“I feel a part of a community of women - it's hard to find female role models at Harvard, but the WiSTEM program serves them to you on a silver platter. It's amazing to be around so many brilliant female minds and [the program] has truly made me feel like I belong in STEM at Harvard.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How am I matched with a Mentor? First, register to be a part of the program. Once your registration is accepted you will receive an email prompting you to complete your profile with information on your academic and professional interests and what help you are looking for. You will have an opportunity to self-match with a mentor. If you did not make self-match by the deadline, an algorithm will provide recommendations and the coordinator will match you with a mentor with background and expertise in the areas you are seeking.
  2. How long will the mentors be available? We ask our mentors to make commitments of at least one academic year in order to ensure that the student is able to fully benefit from the relationship. If a mentor must leave the relationship early, we request at least one month's notice in order to search for a replacement mentor with similar background. Many mentors and mentees choose to stay matched more than one year in the program.
  3. What kinds of programming and outreach will be available? We will send all participants regular updates in a newsletter including Diversity in STEM events, resources, news, policies, and other relevant happenings around campus. We also encourage mentors to participate in forums to promote cross-Harvard community for our various affinity groups.
